If multiple independent sources across Reddit, LinkedIn, and industry forums mention your brand when discussing tax compliance automation (to use a relevant example), that tells the AI engine something meaningful about your authority.
The numbers get starker when you look at where citations actually come from. Brands are 6.5x more likely to be cited through third-party sources (forums, review sites, news articles, and industry discussions) than through their own domains (Superlines ). Your own website, where you control everything, is not where most AI citations originate. They come from what other people say about you.
For B2B companies, this changes the investment calculus. The traditional playbook was: write excellent content on your domain, build backlinks to it, rank for it, capture the click. That playbook still matters (strong onsite content is the foundation), but there’s a critical layer on top of it. You need your experts in the conversations happening across the platforms AI engines trust. Not dropping links. Not posting promotional copy. The crucial detail is which Reddit content gets cited. Analysis from Profound found that 99% of Reddit citations on ChatGPT point to unique discussion threads, not subreddit pages, brand profiles, or corporate content (Search Engine Land ). AI engines aren’t looking for your company’s Reddit presence. They’re looking for genuine conversations where someone with real expertise contributed something worth referencing.
This is where most companies go wrong. They show up, post promotional content, drop links to their blog, and wonder why it doesn’t work (and sometimes why they’ve been banned from a subreddit). Reddit communities are ruthless about self-promotion. Moderators remove it. Users downvote it. The algorithm buries it. The platform is specifically designed to surface helpful contributions and punish anything that smells like marketing.
The approach that actually works (and this is based on what I’ve seen building Avalara’s offsite engagement process) follows a different logic:
- Find the right conversations, not the right subreddits. The value isn’t in picking a subreddit and posting to it on a schedule. It’s in monitoring for specific threads where your target audience is asking questions your experts can genuinely answer.

Consistency beats audience size. 75% of cited LinkedIn authors post five or more times per month. Creators with under 500 followers achieve citation rates comparable to those with much larger followings. You don’t need 50,000 connections. You need to show up regularly with something substantive. Makes sense, eh? AI engines are evaluating the content, not counting your followers.
Depth beats brevity. Articles earn citations at a higher rate than short feed posts. AI engines want substantive, expert content they can extract and present as an answer. A three-sentence hot take might generate likes. An 800-word piece explaining how you solved a specific problem generates citations.
For the B2B companies I work with, the LinkedIn thought leadership approach that drives AI citations follows the same core principle as the rest of the offsite strategy: named experts posting original, substantive content about topics they genuinely understand. Not the company page sharing a blog link with a two-line caption. Individual people with documented backgrounds writing about real work they’ve done. - Voice patterns specific to each platform context. How does this person explain something casually in a Reddit thread versus how they’d frame the same concept in a LinkedIn article? The underlying expertise is identical. The delivery is different.
- Real career background and project stories. When someone on Reddit asks about tax compliance automation, the response needs to draw on actual projects the expert has worked on. Not generic advice that could come from anyone. Specific experience that proves firsthand knowledge.
